There is a distinct magic that happens when a family gathering aligns perfectly with the beauty of cottage country. Recently, my parents visited from abroad. For their very last weekend in town, we decided to plan a special family get-together and booked a two-night house rental through Airbnb in the beautiful town of Innisfil, Ontario.

The Reality of Last-Minute Booking (Lessons Learned!)
Because this was a last-minute decision made just a week prior, our choices were incredibly limited. Late spring and summer are peak travel seasons for Canadians heading north, so my first major piece of advice for anyone planning a getaway is to book early and plan well ahead!
Because options were sparse, the property we secured relied on well water. During our stay, the well water ran out, and our large group had to wait for the tanks to refill.
If you are traveling with a big family or group, I highly recommend looking for properties connected to city water systems to avoid this issue altogether. Most importantly: read the reviews thoroughly before hitting that book button!
Getting to Know Innisfil
Despite the water hiccup, the town of Innisfil completely stole our hearts.
- How Far From Toronto? Located in Simcoe County, Innisfil is roughly 80 kilometers north of downtown Toronto. Depending on traffic, it is just a 1- to 1.5-hour drive up the Highway 400 corridor, making it officially one of the closest and most accessible “cottage country” destinations from the city.
- A Little History: The name Innisfil comes from Inis Fáil, an ancient mythological name for Ireland meaning “Isle of Destiny.” The area was originally home to the Huron-Wendat nation and was later settled by Irish immigrants in the early 1800s, who cleared the dense forests for agriculture.
- Fun Fact: Innisfil is nestled right along the western shore of Lake Simcoe. Because of its unique shape, the town actually boasts over 30 kilometers of beautiful shoreline, transitioning over the decades from a quiet farming community into a vibrant year-round lakeside haven.
Lakeside Blessings & Breathtaking Views
We were incredibly fortunate to visit a local friend who let us use their backyard, dock, and BBQ for a classic evening fire.
Sitting out on the dock was pure bliss. The lake water was remarkably shallow—only coming up to the hip of a six-foot man—making it the perfect, safe spot for our teenagers to sunbathe, kayak, and swim.
The natural views were absolutely breathtaking. Right before a summer rainstorm rolled in, the water turned a dramatic, mesmerizing color. Families of ducks swam right up close to our dock. It was the ultimate, refreshing escape from the concrete views of the city.

A Reflection of Gratitude: Watching My Own Movie
As I sat there in the quiet, watching everyone interact, laugh, and dip their toes into the cold lake water, a wave of intense gratitude washed over me.
Not long ago, I was completely bedridden. I had no interest in life. I was physically exhausted, mentally frustrated, and trapped by pain that made even the smallest movements feel impossible.
Yet, there I was: sitting in the warm sunshine, watching the sunset reflect off the ripples of Lake Simcoe, feeling so profoundly loved by God and my family.
This weekend was a powerful reminder to keep fighting to get stronger and to love myself more. I thanked God again and again for granting me a moment when I could finally stop trying to “direct” the movie of my life and instead just sit back, smell the roses, and enjoy watching the movie unfold beautifully around me.
A Stroll Through Friday Harbour
To cap off a great weekend, we also spent some time visiting Friday Harbour Resort. It is a fascinating oasis of modern, luxury condo living nestled right inside traditional cottage country, complete with a beautiful marina, boardwalk shops, and restaurants.

Finding Peace in the Chaos
Our weekend in Innisfil didn’t go exactly according to plan, but looking back, I wouldn’t trade a single moment of it. It taught me that you don’t need to travel across the globe to find breathtaking views, deep gratitude, or a closer connection to the people you love. Sometimes, all it takes is a short drive up the highway, a quiet dock, and the willingness to just sit back and enjoy the ride.
I left cottage country feeling spiritually refreshed, deeply loved, and incredibly motivated to keep fighting for my health and strength every single day.
Next time, though, I am definitely booking our trip months in advance. I love smelling the roses and watching the sunset, but I’d prefer to do it while knowing for sure that I can actually flush the toilet!
